Download Music For iPod – Do I Have Choices?

Whenever a revolutionary product comes into the marketplace it and often creates its own demand structure. I don’t want to sound too complicated but it’s true-let me briefly explain. Before the iPod era there was a plethora of MP3 haphazard quality download sites. With the coming of the iPod, Apple provided what is arguably the best downloaded interface on the net. This has revolutionized the way and expectations of how we download music.

Effectively the bar was raised!

However what we have seen is that many of the “older” download sites that sprang up are still around and these provide free music (more on this later!).

Okay, so how do I go about getting music for the iPod?

Well quite simply you have three choices:

1. You can buy directly from iTunes and other pay per tune sites.

2. You could look for torrent files (these represent many of the dodgy files that I talked about earlier-please don’t use this option!!)

3. You can source your music from an unlimited download site.

Let’s look at choice number one.

iTunes is highly recommended for those users who do not do a lot of downloading, who do not worry about their budget and prefer to stick to a “known quantity”. To give you an idea as to how expensive downloading individual tunes can be I have about 7000 tracks from my CD collection on my iPod. Luckily, it’s a 30 Gig model so it still has plenty of space-and that’s my entire CD collection. Okay, I have already paid for the albums and singles but just imagine if I had paid for all that music in one hit, at least $7,000!

Hypothetically, if you downloaded just two tracks a day (which is pretty average)-you’re looking at $800 in the year!

What you may not have realised is that while it is relatively easy to transfer CDs into the iPod, it is virtually impossible to transfer music that you’ve bought online onto a CD as you need special software for that. So, in some ways I actually prefer the old way of putting a CD of songs onto my iPod because I feel more comfortable with this option.

What about choice number two – The “free” option?

I have yet to come across anything in life that is truly free. The reason why I don’t like this option is because many of the so-called free sites specialise in transferring other “nasties” along with the file that you download in the form of viruses and Trojans-it’s just too much hassle to sort problems out if these occur.

Now we get to choice number three.

You may now be asking what is an unlimited download site? Well I think, that I would not be giving you all the available choices if I didn’t give you this option. You probably are not aware of this option but it’s a good halfway house solution to the potential heavy cost of using pay per download sites.

If you’re more Internet ‘savvy ‘ you will already know that many of these unlimited download sites rely on P2P networks for the files. I know that you’re going to say that this option is no better than choice 2 but it does have some substantial differences which make it worth considering. Since these sites are competing with the major players in the market they have to be competitive and that means they have to provide excellent quality, ensure that all files are free from viruses, and have an extensive database for the user to search and download from.

These sites come in two categories, monthly subscription or a one-off lifetime membership fee. The one-off fee is possibly the best value for money because the lifetime membership should cost no more than $40 whereas a monthly subscription site will cost between 10 and $15 a month for the same thing.

To attract business many of these sites allow you to download an unlimited amount of music for iPod use.

Everyone Is Downloading Music

Making music downloads legal seems to be the perfect solution to stopping music piracy, which really encompasses downloading music for than anything else. Many people like to download music because it is easy and the quality is of decent quality but most people are concerned about doing it illegally. Here are some reasons why downloading music makes sense. 1. You are able to listen to music for free before purchasing the entire CD. 2. You can are able to listen to new artists.

Just a couple of years ago people were able to download, share and upload music on the original Napster site for free, this was the controversy to the record companies and artists if this was legal. The big popularity of music downloads started with Napster which was initial company which allowed you to download software to share, upload or download music without paying for it. This was revolutionary and showed the power of the internet.

Since Napster has been closed down and not allowed to give out free music and other similar websites have been closed most have been re-invented to provide legal music downloads. When illegal downloading started artists and companies were outraged about this, and they were especially angry with Napster, Napster allowed multiple number of people to connect to each others computer and download and share music without paying for it.

Many companies were worried about the loss of profits from music fans downloading the music instead of going to stores and purchasing the entire CD, so many bands, record companies have tried to enact laws about people downloading from free music sites. When downloading music and you see that you can download music and it has the same quality as buying the CD and easier it makes sense to most people to sit in front of their computer and download the music.

Well, free downloads brought down Napster and they’re illegal – why even risk it. There are sites that offer free music downloads you just need to find them. Napster now offers music at a price. There are many other sites that offer the same deals. You can download many different types of music from ITunes. The cost of this is fairly inexpensive and you do not need to join a club. You can also download videos to view on your video ipod.

When downloading be careful of viruses and or spyware, these programs are usually embedding in the file itself and when you open it or unzip the file your system becomes infected. Look on the internet for reputable music download sites. Another point to remember is that these download site can now record your IP Address. By doing this that can find out what provider is using the range of IPs and once found they can get the records and find out which IP address is assigned to whom. If caught you might have to pay a fine or you could be sent to prison. Think twice before downloading illegally.

Free MP3 Music Download

With the emergence of the MP3 format, free music, unlike before, is no longer hard to come by. The Internet is practically teeming with free MP3 music downloads for all types of music enthusiasts. Although there has been some questions raised on the legal issues involved with online peer-to-peer file sharing, continued patronage of free MP3 music downloads has never quite died down. In fact, it is safe to say that it seemed to have acquired new life and vigor.

Free MP3 Music Download: What is MP3?

MP3 is a shortcut for MPEG – ½ Audio Layer 3. It is sometimes referred to as MPG3, MPG-3, MPG Level 3, MPG Level III, MPEG 3, et cetera. In essence, MP3 is a compressed and formatted copy of an original audio file.

The equations and algorithms used in the MP3 format are similar to that used in JPG when compressing photographs. If you notice, a JPG photo is not quite the same as that of the original. You notice some blurred or darkened parts, blotches, and some minor flaws that are too small to be noticed by the casual observer. This is the effect of file compression.

And because MP3 uses the same fractal-based algorithms as JPG, it should be noted that MP3 does not necessarily sound exactly the same as the original audio file. However, the difference in the sound of both file formats is too subtle and not enough to discount the many benefits of MP3.

Free MP3 Music Download: Why is it free?

There are two reasons why free MP3 music downloads are widely available. First is the fact that some musicians with real talent find it hard to break into the music business. Most artists who actually made it are groomed by recording industry moguls to look and sound that way in order to cater to the wants and music preference of the masses. It’s true that this isn’t very nice but it’s a fact that all struggling musicians have to grapple with. If you are going to be successful, comprises have to be made. Those who are unwilling to compromise or change just to please find themselves frustrated for they have no outlet for their many talents. This is where free MP3 music downloads come in.

Several sites, such as,,, and others, offer opportunities for unsigned artists to publish their works. Online users will find free MP3 music downloads by these artists, listen to it, and judge it by its sound. Many artists have been discovered this way through free MP3 music downloads that serve as a portal to let the general public know that they too exist.

Another reason why free MP3 music downloads are offered is the theory that people use it in product sampling. With free MP3 music downloads, you can sample the work of new artist, listen to a few tracks in an album, or listen to bits of a new single, before going out to the record store to buy the CD.

Informal polls have been conducted to test this theory on free MP3 music downloads and it has been found that many people do go out and buy the record after listening to it online.
